ILKYAR’s Village of Science and Arts (SAV)
Imagine a village not in the distant horizon, but one close to our hearts and homes—a village open to all, where we’re not just visitors but active participants.
Since 2000, ILKYAR has been hosting transformative one-week Summer Science Schools in Ankara (METU) and Istanbul (Bosphorous Uni). Each year, about 100 seventh graders and 40 teachers from various villages across Türkiye immerse themselves in a world of learning. The result is remarkable boost in their motivation and a broadening of their horizons. Our dream is to expand this beacon of knowledge into a year-round Village of Science and Arts—open not just to young students, but to people of all ages.
Our goal is to ignite a lifelong passion for science, reading, and learning in children and young adults. This village, sprawling over 40 acres, will feature dormitories, guest rooms, a cafeteria, versatile workshop rooms, state-of-the-art classrooms and labs, conference rooms, a library, a museum, and much more. Think indoor and outdoor sports areas, a barn, poultry house, lush gardens—the list goes on.
It’s a space for everyone. A place where learning is hands-on, where children can climb trees, get muddy without fear, and where creativity flourishes in every corner.
Discover the Story Behind ILKYAR Foundation
For those new to our mission, ILKYAR (İlköğretim Okullarına Yardım Vakfı – Foundation for Supporting Primary Schools) is an inspiring tale of dedication and vision. The origins of ILKYAR trace back to 1978 when its founder Prof. Hüseyin Vural, a renowned Turkish professor, spent days and nights envisioning ways to enable a brighter future for underserved Turkish children, while pursuing his PhD in the USA. Moved by the challenges faced by rural children in accessing quality education, Prof. Vural established ILKYAR in 1998 to bridge this gap and foster an environment where every child can dream, thrive and explore their potential. Over the years, ILKYAR has grown in scope and impact, extending its reach to include not just primary education but also opportunities for older students and “learners” of all ages, shaping a brighter future for all generations.
In 2021, ILKYAR was granted Turkey’s prestigious Vehbi Koç Foundation Award, in recognition of Prof. Vural’s exemplary vision and dedication. In 2024, ILKYAR was also granted 28.BALEV Beyaz Ödülü.
Progress Update: Building the Dream
Since its inception in 2018, and with intensified efforts since 2021, ILKYAR’s Village of Science and Arts is now close to becoming a reality. Here’s a glimpse of ILKYAR’s journey:
By early 2022, ILKYAR successfully acquired key parcels of land, generously donated after purchase by our supporters.
Zoning for these lands have been completed to meet their vision.
Collaboration with esteemed architects have brought forth exciting, premium designs that blend modern technology with the rich cultural heritage and aesthetic of the town of Safranbolu.
The company that will carry out the architectural project in 2023 has been determined and they started to work.
Detailed projects (architectural, static, mechanical, electrical, etc.) were completed in 2024
